YOM HASHOAH

The JCCV has been the long-time host of the annual Victorian Jewish community Yom Hashoah commemoration. The commemoration provides an opportunity for our community to come together to remember the six million Jewish lives lost during the Holocaust and to pay tribute to the courage of the survivors.

Holocaust survivors and their descendants share their family’s testimony during the commemoration and light memorial candles for those who did not survive.
Students from Jewish schools, Jewish youth movements and members of Jewish cultural groups all contribute to the commemoration through songs, music, poetry readings and reflections.
Melbourne attracted the largest number of Holocaust survivors outside Israel and the Melbourne Jewish community was invigorated with the arrival of Holocaust survivors from Europe following World War II. Many community leaders and members today are the descendants of Holocaust survivors from Poland, Hungary, Germany, France, Czechoslovakia and other European countries.
