JCCV Statement on Premier's Announcement

Jewish Community Council of Victoria’s CEO Naomi Levin responds to Premier Jacinta Allan’s announcement on 17 December, 2024.

Premier Jacinta Allan made some important announcements today that, when enacted, will make Victoria a safer place for all, including Jewish Victorians.

The JCCV thanks the Premier for her constructive engagement with Jewish community leaders. We will continue to consult with Government around the details of these new reforms.

The protest reforms are a good starting point, but will need to be closely monitored in the implementation to ensure they have the desired effect. The JCCV will also continue to call for protest permits, to give police the ability to move demonstrations out of areas where they are likely to cause menace or undue disruption.

The JCCV is particularly pleased with the commitment to introduce a ‘social cohesion pledge’ for multicultural groups that receive government funding. Our multicultural organisations should be delegetimised when they start to promote division or hate.
