The Jewish community has has noted an increase in antisemitic incidents across university campuses in Victoria. The number of incidents concerning lecture material or comments made in class has also risen.

The Australasian Union of Jewish Students (AUJS) is actively working towards a safe environment for students on campus. Though the antisemitic incidents are from a small and loud minority, it does not diminish the severity of their actions. AUJS leaders have been proactively meeting with university staff, security and vice-chancellors to convey the needs of Jewish students returning to campus.

What to do in an incident?

If you are in immediate danger, please call 000.

If you experience antisemitism on campus, please raise the issue with campus security. See details at the end of this article.

Report the incident to AUJS through JEAP app or CSG.

Reporting ensures that the Jewish student affected gets the best outcome. When in doubt, no matter if it is borderline, we encourage students to report.

We encourage you to sign up to your local AUJS club on campus. The best way to have access to all safety information, updates from your campus and event information is to sign up as an AUJS member.

AUJS are not only helping to guide students through these challenging times. They are investing in events that unite the Jewish youth and provide safe spaces for Jewish life on campus – from weekly lunches to social and political events.

Jewish life and safety will always be our priority.

We wish all students a successful, fulfilling, and safe year ahead!
